What is GPRS?
GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Services. It is a more advanced, faster and more affordable way to get Internet content on your mobile phone. There are 3 main reasons why GPRS is better than the previous generation of mobile Internet technology:
- Always-on connectivity
With GPRS, users are always connected to the Internet; no more wasting time on dialing up.
- High speed connections
The connection speed is almost 10 times faster than its precursor, at a blistering 115kbps. This means you can enjoy new and better applications, with access to graphically rich content in full color, with animation and sound.
- Better value
The bill is calculated differently, as you pay based on the amount of data you actually transfer over the Internet (cost per kb), rather than the amount of time you spend online (cost per minute).
What you need?
A mobile phone that's GPRS-enabled or GPRS Modem.
What are the services offered by GPRS?
The services that are offered using GPRS technology:

How does MMS work?
MMS uses the GPRS channel to transmit messages.
The sender sends an MMS message to another user.
The MMS is received by an MMS Center and sends back a confirmation. The sender then gets a 'message sent'. The receiver receives a notification that a new message is waiting.
The receiver can then download the message immediately. Once the message is successfully downloaded, the receiver gets a 'Message Received' indication. Once the receiver has successfully downloaded the message, the sender gets a 'Message Delivered' message.

GPRS and WAP FAQs
1) What is GPRS?
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is an extension of the GSM network that enables data packets to be transmitted at high speed in the same way as on the Internet. The network offers virtually instantaneous connection.
2) At what data speed can data be transmitted?
The maximum theoretical raw data rate per user is 171.2 kbits/sec, net that will be up to 115 kbits/sec.
3) To what extension are the GPRS systems deployed?
Today GPRS have about the same coverage as GSM.
4) Is GPRS used for speech?
Yes but not like the normal speech. There is a new service called Push to Talk based on the GPRS and the data package technique i.e.
5) What is it called when one uses GPRS?
When GPRS is used, you don't say that you make a data call. Instead you say that you connect to a GPRS-session or a data-session.
6) What is required for using GPRS?
To be able to use GPRS, you need a phone or a terminal that supports GPRS or PC Laptop, Handheld with GPRS Modem and also a subscription from SabaFon that provides a GPRS service network.
7) For what purposes GPRS can be used with handheld or PC laptop?
Same like the Internet service provided by the Landline ISP with more speed. For example: brows the Internet, download, check emails…etc
Connect to your Remote Email system and exchange documents by GPRS (Intranet or Company Network)
Will the charge for GPRS be the same, regardless of where in the world we are?
Each and every operator will set his own prices. In other words, GPRS will be charged in the same way as today's GSM.
8) Will all GPRS-subscribers get IP-addresses?
No, each time you connect, you will get a temporary IP-address that you will keep as long as your GPRS-session is connected.
9) What happens if a GPRS-session is running, and I receive an ordinary GSM-call?
You can receive and answer a GSM-call and park the GPRS-session during the conversation. When the GSM-conversation is over, you can re-establish the GPRS-session. However, this depends on what the terminal is capable of, and also what the network can handle.
10) What happens to my GPRS-session if I leave the coverage area?
The GPRS-session doesn't disconnect. If you get outside the coverage area, the data session will be put on hold until you get back into the coverage area.
11) Is it possible to travel between different GPRS networks?
GPRS will not be accessible while in roaming even if there is a Roaming Agreement between Operators that are GPRS compatible.
12) What is WAP?
WAP stands for ‘Wireless Application Protocol’. It is a method of letting a wireless device (usually a cellular phone) view Internet pages, using text only, and very simple black and white pictures. Web sites have to be specially designed for WAP phones, and the pages have to be fairly small since the data speed on cellular phones is a lot slower than on domestic modems.
13) Is WAP secure?
For day-to-day use, WAP is as secure as the cellular standard that your phone works on - GSM, CDMA or TDMA. All these are very secure against eavesdropping. If you are interested in m-commerce or buying plane tickets over a WAP phone, it is fairly secure. The signal from your phone to and from the WAP gateway is as secure as a normal e-commerce web site
14) How does a WAP device connect to the Internet?
Data travels from the WAP device receiving station, much like all voice calls do with cellular phones. This receiving station is known as a WAP gateway, and its task is to act as a middleman between a WAP device and a web-based resource (in other words a web server directly connected to the Internet).
15) Why can't I see Internet pages on my WAP phone exactly as they appear on a PC?
WAP is developed using WML (subset of XML and HTML) which supports a very limited range of tags. This is the main reason why WAP pages differ from what they appear on the Internet. Of course, one of the other reasons is also that a WAP screen is really small.
16) Can I just see text or pictures as well?
You can see pictures, but black and white only. As most cellular phones have a green background, it is technically black and green. The restriction is twofold; firstly there are very few cellular phones that have color displays. However, the main reason is speed. As stated before, the data speed of a cellular phone is quite slow compared to a domestic modem, so pictures take a while to download. Keeping them simple will reduce the amount of time it takes to download.
