Using
the MSN Messenger SMS service
When you sign up to
use the MSN Mobile SMS service, one of the features
available for you to use is the MSN
Messenger SMS service. To welcome you to using this service you receive the following
message:
MSN Messenger Service!
To
retrieve your contact list, reply to this message with CL.
Save
this number in your phone to view your contact list anytime.
The welcome SMS instructs you to send the CL command (this is not
case sensitive). This command once sent, gets a responding SMS containing the
list of your online buddy's, if there are any online or in your list.
From now on you are ready to use the service
to send messages - all you have to do is follow the instructions provided.
You have the ability now to send messages to your buddys. However receiving
messages from buddies is not enabled by default, this is something you can
decide and control.
To
ensure you can receive messages you should read the MSN Mobile Messenger SMS
send
&
receive
instructions. You should also read the information on how to
Manage your Messenger SMS account.
Note:
Each time you send a command it is
a SMS.
Each time you receive an email or part of it, it is a SMS.
A SMS can have 160 characters maximum. I.e. only 160 characters max of your
inbox can be shown at a time. Message text is only broken at the word level.
Each SMS has a cost. Microsoft, MSN, Hotmail or Messenger do not directly charge you.
Your phone carrier does.
To get your contacts list just simply reply to the Messenger "Welcome SMS" or the number it was sent from, with a SMS containing the CL (Contacts list) command (this is not case sensitive). After this SMS just wait for a reply SMS to be sent to you with your list of on-line contacts.
You will receive a list of your
online messenger contacts in a numbered list.
Example:
To be able to get your contacts list at any time you
can either
1. Save the Messenger Welcome
SMS to your phone, then, reply to that SMS with the CL (contacts list)
command
2. Save the
number that Messenger Welcome SMS came from to your mobiles phone book, and send
a SMS to that saved number with the CL (contacts list) command.
3.
Get a Messenger Service
Number
from the registered users pages or the
Messenger section on your PC and
use it to send the CL (contacts list) command
If your contacts list is empty and you have no
contacts who are online at that time then you will receive and SMS saying:
[Sorry! List of your online contacts is
empty.]
When your online contacts are displayed in an SMS their
names are truncated/shortened, and a maximum of 8 buddy’s are shown per SMS.
If you have more than 8 online contacts, you will
see a command at the end of your SMS like this: [Reply M for more].
If you have more than 8 online contacts, this will be indicated to you by
numbering the SMS’s as if they were pages eg. 1/2 That is first page/SMS out of
two. This is a useful feature when navigating through your contact list so you
will always know where you are in relation to your entire online buddy list.
If you want then to see who the rest of your online buddies are then you need to
send a SMS reply with the letter M, you will then receive a SMS in return
which will contain a list of more of your online buddies.
Note:
When you sign up to the MSN Mobile service your status will now appear
differently to other users in the Messenger PC Client when you are offline. You
will always have a red person icon with a Mobile phone when offline or when
using Messenger SMS. This will indicate to your buddy’s that even though you may
look offline that you can be contacted via your mobile phone. As normal when you
are online on the PC client you will have a green person icon. When you pull
down your Contacts List to your mobile phone using the CL command you
will not appear as online but will remain to appear with the red person icon and
the mobile phone. Example:
John
(mobile)
Send
messages to your contacts from your mobile phone
You can send a message instantly to one of your contacts by replying to the SMS
containing your latest list of online contacts, with the associated number of that contact
as they are displayed in the Contacts list.
To send a message to MaryJ, your first contact in the list
the content of your SMS might be:
1 Hello there
When you send a message from your mobile phone to a contact, this message will appear to them in a Messenger window if they are logged on to MSN Messenger on the PC. If they are not logged on to MSN Messenger on their PC then the message will be sent as appropriate to either their Hotmail or their mobile phone. The message will only arrive at their mobile phone if they are set up to receive messages to their mobile phone.

Messenger
Quick Number - What is it?
MSN Mobile SMS has created a useful Messenger
feature called Quick numbers. As you know there are various means to contact
buddy’s via your mobile phone by sending/receiving SMS’s. The Quick numbers
feature allows you to get and save a phone number for each of your buddy’s so
that you can use those same numbers any time you want to contact your buddy’s
via Messenger SMS. So, without having to pull down your contacts list again and
again you can send messages to your contacts using their associated Messenger
Quick Number. This can save you time and SMS’s costs
Messenger Quick numbers for each buddy can be retrieved in a few ways:
1. From Messenger on your mobile phone.
2. From the registered users home page on your PC
It is convenient to save this number to your mobile phone book so you can send messages, using the quick number, to a contact at any time without having download the contacts list or know if your contact is on-line or not.
Messenger
Quick Number - Get it from the phone
You retrieve the quick
number from your phone by
replying
to a SMS containing your latest list of online contacts with the number of the buddy
you wish to chat with.
eg. 1.
After sending this SMS you will receive a reply SMS containing a phone number
eg. the quick number for MaryJ. See example.
This number (example: +1234567890) can be saved to your mobile phone if you wish, and it is the
number that can be used to send all messages to that particular buddy, in this
example MaryJ. This is the permanent number that you can send messages to contact MaryJ. The
contents of your message will be redirected to MaryJ's Messenger client - be
that the PC or the phone.
If
you loose/delete your buddy’s Quick number you can retrieve it again by the same
method, and you can also retrieve it from the
Messenger section of Mobile Registered user’s home on your
PC.
When retrieving a quick number of a buddy you can also see their
Messenger status – i.e. if they are online, offline,
busy etc
Messenger
Quick Number - Get it from the PC
The
Messenger Quick number can be retrieved from the registered users home page.
Click the Messenger section
from the top right and then choose the Quick numbers option from the page that
follows. From here you can see the quick numbers associated with each of your
buddies. Save
the numbers to your phone book or else use the PC site to retrieve the numbers
each time. Saving the numbers to your phone book is easy and quick for sending
messages, therefore you will not need to go back to your PC every time you wish
to use this number to send a message to that buddy. This is the permanent number
that you can send messages to the buddy that the number is assigned to. The
contents of your message will be redirected to buddy's Messenger client - be
that the PC or the phone.
If you loose your buddy's Quick number then you can retrieve it again by the
same method but you can also retrieve it from your
mobile phone via your contacts list

to your phone book or retrieved from your phone/PC, associated to them.

appear to them in a Messenger window if they are logged on to MSN Messenger on
the PC.

Send messages from PC to mobile phone
Messenger
SMS can show you the status of any of your buddy’s just like the PC version.
To find out
the status of a buddy simply pull down your contact list (send CL command
to Messenger SMS service number) and send a reply sms to that SMS with the number associated with that buddy
as they appear in the contacts list. You will then receive a final SMS that may
look like the example give.
As with PC messenger the status that you may see can be any one of these:
Online, Offline, Away, Busy, BeRightBack, OnThePhone, OutToLunch
How
to receive messages on your mobile phone
from your Messenger contacts
Receiving messages to your mobile phone, sent from PC Messenger or from another's mobile phone is not available by default. This is something you need to agree to or not. Therefore, this allows you to control Messenger SMS's to your phone. The default action available after you have signed up to the service is that you can send Messenger SMS's/messages from your mobile phone to your buddies. However, if you wish to have two way conversations with your buddies then it is advised that you agree to receive instant messages to your mobile phone.
Initiating receipt of messages to your mobile phone from your Messenger contacts is easy. Simply, sign out and sign back in to Messenger on your PC with the same account that you have used to sign up to the MSN Mobile SMS service. Once you have done this you will be prompted "Would you like to allow your contacts to send instant messages to your cell phone or pager?". If you choose No then you will not be able to receive messages on your mobile phone from your Messenger buddies, if you say Yes then you will receive messages from your buddies on your mobile.

Windows Messenger/Windows Xp Users:
If you use Windows Messenger on Microsoft Windows Xp you must install the MSN add-in
in order to receive the prompt message above. Go to the
Messenger download page or your
local language equivalent site. Click download and install the add-in. When you
sign in again to Messenger then choose Yes to allow users to send messages to your mobile
phone, or No if you don't.
Choosing Not to receive messages
Having chosen no,
if a buddy of yours wants to send you a message from their
PC Messenger, they can right click on your name but the "Send a message to a
mobile device" option will be inactive (greyed out).
At a later stage if you wish to receive messages to your mobile phone but you
can in your Messenger client go to
Tools -> Options ->
Phone
tab and tick the box
next to "Allow people on my contacts list to send messages to my
mobile device"
Choosing To receive messages
No matter which way you go about choosing to receive messages to your mobile
phone from buddies, this has an affect on your PC Messenger Client as follows.

This action ticks a box in your
Messenger PC client which allows your contacts to send messages to your mobile phone.
You can uncheck this at any time and this will stop messages arriving to your
mobile phone. You can enter your different contact numbers at this window also.
These can be used to indicate your call back number/location when you are
sending a message to a contact from your PC messenger.
!Now you can both send and
receive messages with your mobile phone using MSN Messenger SMS!

Send
messages from PC to mobile phone
In order for a one to
receive
messages on their mobile phone that are sent to them from your PC Messenger
client, the receiver needs to have agreed yes to receive messages to their
mobile device and all the associated steps that go with it.

Now, when you or any of
your buddies are offline on the PC (or
online on
your mobile phone, they will appear like
John
(mobile)) and someone wants to send messages
to you from PC Messenger, they can right click on the user name and choose "Send
a message to a mobile device". If you had chosen not to receive messages to
your phone then this option would be inactive in their Messenger client for that
user.

When you initiate sending messages to buddies in this fashion then you are prompted with the following message box. You can choose to see this every time or never again as per the instructions in the message.

When you send a message you will receive
confirmation that the message was sent or not. The message will arrive at the
device in the form of a SMS. You can choose to provide a your call-back/contact
number also (in the example:
simoshea12 is the PC client and Simon is the device client).
Send
and receive messages from mobile phone to mobile phone
Presently if a user
pulls down their contacts list (via CL command) to their device they will only
see online contacts. So how can you contact a fellow MSN Mobile SMS users who is
mobile.
If a contact you wish to send a message to is logged off PC Messenger and they
are using Messenger via their mobile phone then they too will appear offline on
PC Messenger (with the red person icon and the mobile phone. Example:
John
(mobile)).
The way to contact that person is to already have their quick number saved to
your mobile phone book, or get their quick number from the Mobile website if you
have access to a PC. That way you can send your messages to the Quick number for
that contact and they should receive the message in the form of a SMS to their
mobile device.
Note:
When you sign up to the
MSN Mobile service you status will now appear differently to other users in the
Messenger PC Client when you are offline. You will always have a red person icon
with a Mobile phone when offline or when using Messenger SMS. This will indicate
to your buddy’s that even though you may look offline that you can be contacted
via your mobile phone. As normal when you are online on the PC client you will
have a green person icon. When you pull down your Contacts List to your mobile
phone using the CL command you will not appear as online but will remain
to appear with the red person icon and the mobile phone. Example:
John
(mobile)
If a message sent to you couldn’t be sent to the device or to PC IM then you would get this email to your hotmail:
The following mobile instant message could not be delivered to
you via Messenger because you were offline.
From: maryj@hotmail.com
Message: Are we still on for dinner?
